What is fermenting?
The art of fermenting food is deeply rooted in tradition. Countless cultures around the world ferment in part as a preservation technique but also as a way to enhance the nutritional profile of ingredients. Fermenting is basically transforming ordinary foods with bacteria and yeasts into probiotic powerhouses rich in vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
Why consume fermented foods?
Beside the fact that they taste amazing, there's a plethora of reasons to eat fermented foods everyday! A properly functioning digestive system (gut) is critical to good health. In fact, 60 -80% of our immune system is located in our gut and 90% of our neurotransmitters (chemicals responsible for regulating mood) such as serotonin are made there too. Problems in our gastrointestinal (GI) tract can cause more than just stomach pain, gas, bloating or diarrhea they can be the root cause of many chronic health problems. Gut imbalances and leaky gut have been linked to hormonal imbalances, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and hashimotos thyroiditis, diabetes, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, eczema and rosacea, just to name a few.
Why make your own ferment foods?
There's a lot of high quality fermented foods and drinks readily available to purchase which is convenient and perfect when time poor. However if you're budget conscious or just enjoy being in the kitchen, then making them yourself is far, far cheaper and I'm here to show you it's also safe and easy peasy! So let's party!
